FIREWOOD QUALITY

Our firewood logs are kiln dried ensuring that the moisture content is below 20% Ready-To-Burn accredited and suitable for safe use in smoke control zones with a DEFRA approved stove.

Kiln dried oak logs tend to burn quite well and efficiently compared to non-dried oak logs. Here are a few key points on how kiln dried oak burns:
  • Moisture content – Kiln drying reduces the moisture content of oak logs to around 15-20%, down from fresh cut logs which can be 50% or more. The lower moisture content means the logs will burn hotter and more completely.
  • Ignition – The lower moisture makes kiln dried logs easier to initially ignite and they will catch fire more quickly. Once lit, they tend to burn steadier as well.
  • Heat output – With less moisture to evaporate, more of the wood’s energy goes directly into flame and heat production. Kiln dried oak can provide around 8,600 BTUs per pound versus around 7,800 BTUs for fresh cut oak.
  • Burn time – The lower moisture also allows kiln dried logs to burn for longer periods before having to be restoked. They will burn down to finer ash as well.
  • Less smoke/creosote – With more complete combustion, kiln dried oak produces less smoke and creosote buildup in chimneys and stoves. This makes them ideal for wood stoves and fireplaces.
So in summary, the drying process makes oak logs burn hotter, faster, and more efficiently while producing less smoke. This makes kiln dried oak an excellent choice for firewood.
